Cotta Warriors Museum: Qin Shi Huang
Mausoleum, with its 40 meters high tumulus,
was built in the third century B.C.
for Qin Shi Huang, the first emperor
of the Qin Dynasty (221-206 B.C.). In
1974 a huge pit with numerous Qin pottery
figures was discovered to the east of
the mausoleum. The unearthed clay warriors
and horses are huge and life-like and
provide valuable data for the study
of the military weaponry and sculpture
of the time. The excavation of this
incredibly rich find is a continuing
process and visitors can actually see
the archaeologists at work revealing
more and more of these remarkable statues.
Nothing comparable to it has ever been
uncovered in China before.
