Each pavilion, hall, stone and stream in the garden is expressing the quintessence of South China landscape design from Ming and Qing Dynasty.
Former French Concession: It is once designated for the French from 1849 to 1946, consisting of today's Luwan and Xuhui Districts. Interesting architecture built with French and Belgian venture investments and showing mixed Chinese-European styles. Today, the area is characterized by quiet, tree-lined avenues, French-style villas, interesting boutiques, lively bars and quaint cafes that are not typical of China.
The Bund: As the architectural symbol of Shanghai, the Bund is on the west bank of Huangpu River and winds one kilometer. The name "the Bund" is derived from an Anglo-Indian term meaning literally "muddy embankment". To the west of the Bund, there are 52 magnificent buildings standing in different styles: Rome, Baroque, Gothic, Renaissance, Classic and the combination of Eastern and Western style, most of them were erected before 1937.
