is situated in the southern coast of South China
Sea, to the west of the Pearl River's estuary.
It consists of Macao peninsula, the islands of
Taipa and Coloane. Macao's economy relies heavily
on tourism and casinos. In the l960s, Macao reshuffled
its economic structure, increasing imports and
exports dramatically. At present, foreign trade,

have become the four pillars of Macao's economy.
Macao's tourism industry is well developed. Its
best-known sights are the A-ma Temple, the Cathedral

known as "the Oriental Monte Carlo (a celebrated
gambling city in Europe)".
Macao has belonged to China since
ancient times. It was formerly subordinate to
Xiangshan County (today's zhongshan city) of Guangdong
Province. In 1553, the Portuguese set foot on
Macao on the pretext of drying drenched goods.
They bribed local officials to gain permission
to drop anchor in Macao's harbor and engage in
trade. Since the Opium War in 1840. Macao was
occupied by Portuguese for a long time. On December
20th of 1999, the People's Republic of China resumed
its sovereignty over Macao and established the
Macao Special Administrative Region.
The massive stone facade of the ruins
of the Cathedral of Saint Paul (Dasanba in Chinese)
has become the symbol of Macao. The A-ma Temple
is a place to worship the seafarers' goddess "A-ma"
(mother in southern Fujian dialect), also known
as "the Queen of Heaven". Every year
on Chinese New Year's Eve and the 23rd day of
the third Chinese lunar month, fishermen will
come here to celebrate A -ma's birthday. There
is always an endless stream of pilgrims in the
Leal Senado Square, Charitable
Institution, St. Dominic's Church, Ruins of St.
Paul, Monte Fortress, Macao City Museum, Barra
Temple, Sun Yat-sen Memorial House, the Arts Garden,
Cultural Center, Grand Prix Museum, Lisboa Casino,
and horse race.
